The DOL and other groups might have the time and capacity to work on retirement income strategies, now that a U.S. appellate court decision has vacated the Fiduciary Rule, industry experts. Michael P. Kreps, a principal at Groom Law Group, said he is doubtful the DOL would appeal the March 15 federal appeals court decision vacating the Fiduciary Rule. Potentially free from having to focus their time on the rule, DOL regulars might turn their attention to other issues, such as lifetime income, instead, Kreps said.

The year 2030 will mark a demographic turning point for the United States: in that year, all Baby Boomers will be 65 or older, making one in every five Americans of retirement age. In 2035, the Census Bureau projects that older adults will edge out children in population size: those 65+ are expected to number 78.0 million, while children under age 18 will number 76.4 million.

IUL to the Rescue of Low UL Sales

IUL sales kept overall life insurance sales in the black last year, and also appear to be subsidizing insurers with low fixed UL sales: 9 of the top 10 IUL sellers had sales increases in Q4 last year, compared to Q3, said Wink’s. Seven of the top 10 IUL sellers had double-digit increases in Q4 IUL sales compared to Q3. Fourth quarter 2017 IUL sales rose 20% to $575 million compared to Q3; Q4 IUL sales rose 7.6% over Q4 2016. IUL sales in 2017 rose 6% to $1.9 billion over 2016.
